'The house protects the dreamer'


A playful and thought-provoking group show from collaborators Henny Burnett, Esmé Clutterbuck and Emma Gregory exploring themes ‘close to home’ with ceramics, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography and projections, hosted by Maverick Projects.





‘I am not what I am, I am what I do with my hands…’ Louise Bourgeois In truth we are all in a constant state of flux and there can emerge, in the home, a tension between vulnerability and comfort In this dilapidated Victorian house with its wooden framework exposed, the artists create a familiar yet slightly skewed environment and question the notion that ‘The house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace’, Gaston Bachelard, (Poetics of Space). The exhibition too will be in a state of flux… Henny, Esmé and Emma established a working relationship through collaborative drawing at Drawing Projects UK in 2019. Subsequent residencies at The Garage in 2020 and 2021 narrowed their focus to the domestic, gender and motherhood. ‘The House..’ is the result.



 

About the artists Henny Burnett Henny’s work reflects a fascination with both museums and the personal memorabilia we all gather, asking the audience to examine how we view such artefacts today. She is a mixed media artist working mainly in sculpture and installation. She is interested in the dynamics of opposites. Her work explores impermanence and memory; is rooted in the fabric of the home, yet presented in an historical context. Henny attended Byam Shaw and Edinburgh Colleges of Art. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, undertaking residencies in Italy and Britain. She has won awards from Juliet Gomperts Trust, The British council, ACE and travel grants to Canada and USA. Recently a finalist for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2021 and awarded a commission for new work by Procreate Project funded by ACE. https://www.axisweb.org/p/hennyburnett/ https://www.instagram.com/hennyburnett/ Esmé Clutterbuck Esmé makes drawings and prints, often based on hair. The relationship between the drawing and the surface it is made on is of deep significance. These supports include digital images, magazine pages and the intimate, quotidian surfaces of domestic linen, flannels and towels; her drawing becoming the latest addition to the human histories of these objects. Esmé has exhibited nationally and internationally and shown in numerous open exhibitions including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. She has work in public and private collections; is a member of BV Studios and a sometime member of Spike Print Studios, Bristol. She has been a visiting lecturer and tutor at numerous colleges and universities. She was herself trained at Central St Martin’s and the Royal Academy Schools. https://www.instagram.com/esmeclutterbuck/ https://esmeclutterbuck.co.uk Emma Gregory Emma employs a range of materials and processes with a playful and instinctive approach: drawing, print, assemblage, installation, text and sculpture. Emma has produced, managed and delivered gallery-based education programs for the Royal Festival Hall, Hayward Gallery, Whitechapel, and the Bluecoat in Liverpool (among others). She is a visiting lecturer for several universities and leads a CPD course for professional artists at Spike Print Studios in Bristol. The Victorian house is in an evocative dilapidated state with exposed timber-framed interiors and peeling paintwork. It is close to Peckham Rye station, with parking on site in Copeland Industrial Estate. Covid-safe precautions will be observed.
